Award-winning garden demands the best in recycled materials

Supplying recycled materials to RHS Cardiff award-winning garden

The preparation and selection of suppliers and collaborators is vital when designing and building an RHS Show Garden.  MCM were more than happy to work towards an award-winning partnership when approached by Brent Purtell of Purtell Parker-Smith Design Studio.  The Surrey-based designer works on designs and gardens across the UK and took the opportunity to showcase these skills at the prestigious RHS Cardiff Show this April (12-14 April 2019).

National Supplier of Recycled Materials

Brent approached MCM as a recognised, reputable national supplier of recycled materials.  Keen for us to share in his image of creating a show garden to display the beauty of secondary stones, Brett’s vision was one of a garden embracing the use of recycled construction material, collected from projects across the country. After detailed discussions and a site visit to one of our recycling facilities, we demonstrated the care and attention needed for the handling and selection of reclaimed materials.  Happy with our sustainable approach, the material blends and handling regime, Brent and MCM were in agreement: The Show Garden Journey was on!

Theme: Urban Regeneration

The garden creation, built by Xardin Edward was draped over a 10m x 6m plot at the event. It made a powerful statement, showing how a small public garden can embrace the use of commonly-found construction materials, revitalising a tired, grey urban space. MCM provided the 10mm down for the pathways and the 75mm stone nuggets for the basket gabion pillars. Speaking before the garden build, Brent said:
“The theme chosen by the RHS is ‘Urban Regeneration’ and I certainly hope that our design of an urban gallery hits the mark  We’ve created an exciting ‘urban gallery’ for street artists to display their own creativity within the space…”  – Brent Purtell

Showing off at Cardiff Castle

Displayed in the shadow cast by the glorious outline of Cardiff Castle, the RHS Cardiff show build commence on the previous Saturday.  The finished garden was ready on Tuesday 9th prior to show opening.  The logistics and delivery conditions for such an event are usually intricate and limited by access.  The intricacies and access issues were handled admirably by the MCM team, ensuring the project was managed perfectly in terms of vehicle and staff selection, product availability and close client and site liaison in limited space and timeframe. Judging took place pre-Show on the Thursday where the garden received a Bronze Medal which it could proudly display alongside the finished creation for public viewing over the show weekend.
