BALI National Landscape Awards recognise the very best in the industry, from the smallest designers and contractors, to the largest multi-location and commercial landscaping companies. Winning one is the pinnacle of professional achievement for BALI members, requiring the highest levels of professionalism and skill in a wide variety of landscaping projects. To help honour the very best in the industry, MCM sponsors the awards, and we even presented one last year. We’re proud to be a part of the best of British landscaping and we’re looking forward to joining friends and colleagues at the award ceremony again this year. Good luck to all the award nominees – see you there!

Celebrating success at BALI Tour of Battersea Power Station

On 4 October 2018, Shazna AliBen Tully and Anthony Mcloughlin from MCM attended a BALI-organised event, with the focus on the BALI East Anglia membership.  A superb opportunity for the MCM team to meet their landscaping clients en masse, as well as potential new procurement potential for soils, aggregates and their waste management services, the event also included a tour around the prestigious new regeneration development at Battersea Power Station.

The Battersea Power Station Peregrines

As a fascinating side story during the tour, we heard of the now infamous Battersea Power Station Peregrines.  Well-known locally and to enthusiasts, there is a community of peregrine falcons who also reside and nest at the new development.  Their next is at the pinnacle of the site in the quiestest corner.  These birds are endangered and usually found on cliffs and in remote rock formations – not normally associated with urban building developments!  With their thankful increase in numbers however, London now hosts the second highest urban population of peregrines in the World, after New York.

The BALI Event at Battersea Power Station

Superbly organised by BALI East Anglia and well-attended by the landscaping membership and associated industries, suppliers, designers and specifiers, the event also included a Meet the Buyer break-out session and speakers from Andy Sturgeon Design and LDA Design.  Shazna praised the event as:

“another brilliant BALI promotional event, made all the more fascinating by the landscape story and its development, unfolding in front of us on the tour itself.

The MCM team will be following the BPS landscaping story and its procurement closely.

MCM industry support and promotion

MCM regularly support BALI events through sponsorship and attendance and are BALI Awards Category Sponsors – Regeneration Scheme +£500K at this year’s BALI National Landscape Awards 2018 taking place on 7 December 2018.

Jason Matthias | The M of MCM

Jason Matthias | The M of MCM

Jason Matthias 1960 – 2016

In November especially,  we remember those we have lost.  At MCM this time of year has an added sadness, as we remember the sudden passing of Jason Matthias, one of the company’s founders, at the early age of 56 in November 2016.

The M of MCM

Much more than the M of MCM – Matthias Construction Materials – Jason was the driving force behind our business success and growth from the very beginning in 1992. Behind this great man was a close-knit, supportive and loving family – both at home and at work – from his wife Shazna, children and their broader MCM family at the Surrey headquarters.

Strong principles and inspiration

Jason instilled the spirit of inclusiveness at MCM.  Everyone was welcome.  Jason managed to join the dots between supplier and customer. Today, we maintain this core standard inspired by him and thus continue the traditions of good value and great business practice.

Legacy

MCM now supplies over 500,000 tonnes of construction and landscaping material each year, including 100,000 tonnes of topsoil and 250,000 tonnes of primary aggregates – and 100,000 one-tonne bags. The M of MCM is synonymous with multi-faceted products, meticulous attention to detail and mastery in the supply of soils, aggregates and waste removal … but for the MCM team, it will remain the M of Jason Matthias: businessman, husband, father, colleague and friend.

Supporting, nurturing, empowering: The M of MCM

Supporting, nurturing, empowering: The M of MCM

The M of MCM

Every business has a personality at its very heart: a leader, an innovator, a force that drives them to succeed.  And at the centre of our MCM heart is Jason Matthias.  Through the M of Matthias Construction Materials, Jason’s spirit continues to inspire and enthuse the team as it has done since he started the company in 1992.  A personality that made a huge impact on the industry, his clients, his associates, his colleagues and above all his wife Shazna and their children, the ripples of Jason’s sudden passing in November 2016 at the age of 56 have been felt every day since.

The MCM Family

Jason and Shazna Matthias built and fortified the MCM business which continues to thrive and remains firmly grounded on the most solid of foundations.  Every November, everyone upon whom Jason’s light shone remembers him for his lust for life, his supportive and encouraging nature and how he always looked out for, supported and empowered his staff.  This ethos and his spirit lives on across the MCM family – at business and at home.

Strong principles and inspiration

Jason instilled the spirit of inclusiveness at MCM. Everyone was welcome. Jason managed to join the dots between supplier and customer. Today, we maintain this core standard inspired by him and thus continue the traditions of good value and great business practice. Director Shazna shares a few words on her husband, her business partner, her friend and his legacy:
“A most genuine, beautiful man with values to match and a real lust for life and business success. His natural ability to support, nurture and encourage those around him is instilled in all of us.  Jason remains a shining light throughout MCM.  Jason’s legacy in our business is his work ethic, his passion and his aim to empower others to be the same.  His commitment to honest values and solid business practices lives on – something we’re really proud of.  We’re still a family business with me at the helm and most of our team were lucky enough to know and appreciate Jason’s attributes first-hand.  They continue to reflect these in their ongoing development of the business, all day, every day.  A truly unique and remarkable man in life, business and friendship, the Matthias name lives on in all of us.  Jason was a true leader with a passion for life and has instilled life-changing values in all of us and our staff and management team. A friend to all.

MCM celebrate Excellence at BALI National Landscape Awards 2019

The Place? Grosvenor House, Park Lane.  The Event? The 43rd BALI National Landscape Awards 2019.  The Result? A fantastic culmination of a very successful year in landscaping supply.  The Reason? A chance to raise a glass or two to celebrate our Award win in the Affiliate Exceptional Service Category and our Sponsorship of the Regeneration Scheme >£500K with winners Blakedown Landscapes.

Affiliate Excellence

The annual Awards are organised and promoted by the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) at the event that took place on Friday 6 December 2019.  They celebrate the skills, hard work, quality, commitment and successes of BALI Registered members and are the largest landscape Awards in Europe. They recognise excellence in landscape design, construction and maintenance both in the UK and overseas, as well as awarding Employer Excellence and Affiliate Exceptional Service – and that’s us!

The judge’s feedback was that the quality and comprehensive content of the MMCM Award Submission was clear, concise and had good supporting evidence.

“A worthy winner, congratulations to all concerned” – BALI Judging Panel

MCM also reinforced their BALI membership support as they once again took the stage as Sponsors in the category “Regeneration Scheme over £500,000”.  Both award winners, Talbot Farm Landscapes and Blakedown Landscapes, had submitted exceptional projects.  The Principal Winner Award was presented by MCM’s Managing Director Shazna Ali to Blakedown for their Great Yarmouth Borough Council Venetian Waterways project.  The scheme also received a Special Award for ‘Best Community involvement’ at the Awards.

People Focus: Darrel Burgess, MCM Sales Director

People Focus: Darrel Burgess, MCM Sales Director MCM

In a new feature where we focus on the people of MCM, we want to shine the spotlight on Darrel Burgess, MCM’s recently-promoted Sales Director.

Darrel heads up the Sales and Technical team at MCM, working alongside four other commercial colleagues who manage the supply chain, logistics, customer support and technical specification involved with delivering soils and aggregates to the nation’s construction projects.

Instrumental

Darrel has been with MCM for almost 9 years and has been instrumental in the company’s developments in recent years, forging new and managing existing partnerships and strategic alliances and ensuring the focus is maintained on the consistently high quality delivery of landscaping materials and waste management services for which MCM is renowned.

Far-reaching

Previously employed directly in construction and in a technical sales role with a little bar work thrown in, Darrel started as a Sales Executive in 2011 before becoming Sales Manager in 2015 and, in 2019, Sales Director. His role now is a far-reaching one: managing the account team and the purchase and sales operations, as well as acting as a company ambassador at trade and corporate events.

The best back-up

And what makes Darrel tick? In his own words:

“There’s nothing better than taking a client’s first enquiry through to the finished solution, being on site, seeing it happen. We’re very much a face-to-face, hands-on team and that’s the best way to be in this industry. And it helps to have a good set of guys around me, really the best back-up there is.”
