Smart Waste: Delivering circular construction

Smart Waste: Measuring and Monitoring

Making a difference in resource efficiency

Predicting, Planning and preventing Construction Waste

As just one of our Smart Waste initiatives, we are leading the industry forward in managing resources locally and sustainably.  Our network of construction waste partnerships and affiliations allows MCM to reinforce their direct collaboration with clients in the construction, utility, civil engineering and landscape industries.  These initiatives are helping our customers to predict, plan, reduce and prevent construction waste, managing their construction waste efficiently and sustainably, with transparency, tracking and reporting at every stage.

The Construction Waste Portal

With MCM as one of its early waste resource management adopters, ConstructionWastePortal.com is an online resource that is helping the industry predict, manage, reduce, and prevent waste on construction projects across the UK. The portal analyses data from projects across the UK, enabling accurate forecasting, costing and reporting of waste tonnages.

Clients utilising the marketplace feature can select local waste management companies from their service offering and price indicators, making smarter decisions and procuring services locally and sustainably.

Horse Equestrian Arena

Choosing the right equestrian arena sand

Choosing the right horse arena sand

Sourcing for equestrian, polo or gallop arenas

Choosing the right sand surface for a horse riding arena is crucial for the safety and performance of both the horse and rider. Durability, performance, wear and cushioning can be determined by a number of factors, important to consider when sourcing the right material and supply partner:

Particle size

Equestrian arena sand suitable for riding surfaces will have particles uniform in size within a range from 0.1 to 2.0 mm in diameter. Any larger and the surface is too harsh; any smaller and it will compact too easily and harden. With the particle’s angularity, they will interlock, creating a more stable surface.

Washed or unwashed

Washed sand is preferable as it reduces the presence of fine particles, which can cause dust and respiratory problems for both horse and rider.

Footing depth

The footing depth should be between 10-15cm, sufficient to cushion and reduce the risk of impact or injury on the horse.

Local availability

Avoiding excessive transportation costs and minimising carbon footprint, MCM always endeavour to source material from local partners. This helps meet environmental, cost and logistical targets.

Get in touch with MCM to discuss your horse arena sand requirements and its purpose, e.g. to create a firmer surface for dressage or a softer surface for jumps. The MCM team will be able to advise on the most suitable grade and specification of equestrian sand for your arena surfaces.

Mineral Producers Association warning in new report

In its latest members’ Annual Mineral Planning Survey (AMPS) for 2022, the Mineral Producers Association (MPA) reports a 10-year long failure to replenish rock, sand and gravel reserves at a pace anywhere near matching the rates at which the UK construction industry is using them.

Construction aggregates

Land-sourced aggregates, or primary aggregates increased in sales volumes by 19 million tonnes in 2021 alone, an increase of 15.4% on 2020. Just 50% of sales of sand and gravel were replenished from newly-permitted crushed rock reserves and 45% of crushed rock.

Regional easing

At a regional level, the picture is even more concerning, with counties that traditionally have been responsible for large exports to other British regions seeing the greatest impact and the fastest declines in reserves.

A far-reaching supply network

As the threat to resources grows, the importance of a wide supply network grows too. MCM have an extensive reach across the UK, and always endeavour to source material locally to help meet environmental, cost and logistical targets, as well as spreading demand across multiple quarries.

Recycled and hybrid Aggregates

The concerns surrounding longer term reserves of land-sourced aggregates add more weight to the arguments for choosing recycled or hybrid construction aggregate alternatives. MCM are at the forefront of supplying the UK landscape and construction industries with these secondary alternatives – and hybrid aggregates – and are committed to the compliant recovery, recycling and reuse of demolition arisings and construction waste wherever possible.

The MPA estimates that recycled and secondary materials accounted for nearly 70 million tonnes* of the 253 million tonnes of construction aggregates supplied in Great Britain in 2021.

Smart regulation

The MPA recently called for a series of smart regulation reforms for mineral planning and MCM support its demands that the Government acts at the urgently to reduce uncertainty, delays and costs in the mineral products industry, UK construction and other industries that depend on its products.

Discover the key findings and read the MPA’s full survey here.

Savills Garden RHS Chelsea 2023

The bedrock and foundations of two RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gardens in 2023

Recycled landscape materials for two RHS Chelsea gardens

Savills Garden and Samaritans Listening Garden 2023

This year, MCM are supplying aggregates and sand across two separate show gardens at RHS Chelsea 2023, both in collaboration with Mark Gregory and his Landform Consultants teams.

RHS Chelsea Show Garden supremo Gregory has designed The Savills Garden and his company, Landform Consultants, will be in charge of the build of this and a second showpiece, The Samaritans’ Listening Garden. This second garden has been designed by Darren Hawkes, who returns to the Show having previously won Gold in 2017 and 2015.

Sustainable Landscape Construction

Both gardens are designed and built on a bedrock and foundation of recycled materials.

The Savills Garden Plot to Plate

For the Savills Garden, the recycling revolution is going a step further with its introduction of cement-free, ultra-low carbon mortar as the bedding.  MCM were on site at the early build-up stages to deliver hand-selected, trialled and compliant blends of reject sand to combine with the cem-free mortar. Delivered in bags for logistical ease and flexibility, the materials will help Mark and his Landform team in the earliest stages of preparation over the next few days.

The Samaritans’ Garden

As part of the groundwork for The Samaritans’ Garden, MCM have supplied bagged Type 1 recycled aggregate in volume which has been used as a sub-base for compaction and creation of the pathways and hard-standing elements within the design.

Designed by Darren Hawkes, who has recently qualified as a listening volunteer, the garden is a special opportunity to celebrate the charity’s 70 years of supporting people. A remodelled version of Samaritans’ Listening Garden will be permanently relocated at a Samaritans branch.

Promoting the use of recycled construction materials

Promoting the use of recycled construction materials

Sustainable construction practices

Two of MCM’s recent client projects have used recycled aggregates as a sustainable, durable, cost-effective sub base material for major construction projects at Legoland Windsor and Thorpe Park. Both of these theme park construction projects promote the use of recovered waste from demolition arisings.

Recycled aggregates provide a number of benefits over primary materials including:

Environmental sustainability

Using recycled aggregates as a construction sub-base helps reduce the demand for virgin materials, such as natural gravel or crushed rock. By reusing materials from demolished structures or construction waste, we can help contractors conserve natural resources and minimise the environmental impact associated with quarrying.

Cost-effectiveness

Recycled aggregates are often more affordable compared to primary quarried materials. The costs of  recovering and processing construction waste is typically lower than extracting virgin material. Using recycled aggregates as a sub-base can contribute to cost savings in construction projects without compromising performance.

Structural performance

Recycled aggregates, when properly processed and graded, can provide suitable strength and stability as a construction sub-base. They can effectively support the load of overlying structures, offering adequate structural performance for a wide range of applications.

Waste reduction

Incorporating recycled aggregates into construction projects helps divert construction and demolition waste from landfills. Instead of disposing of these materials, recycling them as sub-base material reduces the volume of waste generated, promoting a more sustainable approach to waste management.

Sustainability credentials

Using recycled aggregates helps companies achieve their sustainability goals and certifications, as well as benefiting their organisations by adopting a more sustainable construction practice.

Weathering the storm: 2/6mm Permeable Recycled Aggregate from MCM

The perfect permeable recycled aggregate

Free-draining for rainwater management

With site drainage considerations particularly crucial at this time of year, it is worth considering a recycled aggregate alternative to keep your landscape and groundworks free of standing water and run-off this season.

Effective, free-draining and cheaper than a primary aggregate, this 2/6mm permeable aggregate bedding layer helps you meet sustainability targets on site, reducing the drain on natural resources by opting for a secondary aggregate.   A bonus for the environment and your financial budgets.

Available from MCM as an underlayer for block paving and driveways, this recycled aggregate is ideal for landscaping projects as well as groundworks.

Sourcing materials with SuDS in mind

MCM 2/6mm Permeable Aggregate allows surface water to run off and escape through the sub-base and into the ground beneath.  Its grading gives a balance between the sub-base layer’s stability and the free movement of water off, down and through.

This makes this recycled permeable aggregate the perfect base layer for sports pitches, paving, car parks and driveways.

All excavated waste must now be classified | EA Changes 31 January 2021

All excavated waste must now be classified | EA Changes 31 January 2021

Classifying and assessing waste

Environment Agency changes from 31 January 2021

As of the end of January 2021, the Environment Agency (EA) will require that all unassessed waste from utilities excavations must be classified as hazardous.

What does the mean for me?

Whilst previously under the EA’s Regulatory Position Statement RPS 211 such wastes could have been classified as non-hazardous, it now means that you must assess, classify and arrange removal and disposal of such materials differently – as hazardous waste poses a potential threat of contamination.

How can MCM help?

If you have waste from excavations on your site, you can contact our Waste Team.  We can visit sites to inspect, test and classify waste types, reporting on findings and propose remediation, removal and disposal.  This assessment will assign a European Waste Code (latest copy to viewable here) and will enable us to organise its swift and safe removal and disposal so that your site works may continue unhampered. To find out more, call the MCM Waste Team on 0330 128 1030 or contact us today.

You can view the full EA’s Guidance for Excavated waste from Utilities here.

Worried about waste and contamination?

Worried about waste and contamination?

It’s your call: Rapid Measure Testing

Worry-free Muck and Waste Testing on Site

As a contractor or landscaper, you’ll recognise the importance of managing the site clearance.  The soil, muck and waste you remove will likely be a mix of materials and will need to be handled differently.
  • What if there is potentially contaminated soil?
  • What if there is coal tar present?
  • What are the classifications of contaminants?
  • How will you know where to start?

Your Site Waste Management Checklist

The answer is simple: an on-site Rapid Measure Test.  The MCM team can be on site quickly – even the same day of your call.  We’ll take some representative samples of the materials and have the results back to you swiftly, with classification and a full report.  Once we know what we’re up against, we can take it from here.  The classification report will help us gain approval from local facilities so that we can advise on the best remedial action – and take the hassle of arranging that off your hands too.

Managing waste to save time and money

That’s comprehensive testing, classification and remediation, saving you time and money and allowing you to move your builds forward.  And if the volume of contaminated material is too large to deal with immediately, we can return weekly and repeat the rapid measure testing, removing as non-hazardous material as the levels change – a real game changer in terms of management and cost saving.

Pathway to a perfect park landscape: Soils, Aggregates and Stone

First impressions really count, and that does not stop at any park entrance. It continues onto the thoroughfare and beyond into every pocket of land. Waterlogged patches, unruly pathways and pot-holed roads are an instant turn-off, causing untold damage to your venue’s reputation as well as to vehicles and pedestrians.

Planted beds, hedge screening, wildflower meadows and green roofs can make your outdoor experience stand out for all the right reasons, too.  At that means taking a closer look beneath your feet…

Roadways, pathways, play and plants

Suppliers of British Standard topsoils and aggregates for almost a quarter of a century, MCM source materials from quarries and sites across the South East but have a UK-wide logistics network and are the first port of call for soils and aggregates to projects including Holland Park play area in Kensington, Kearsney Court historic park in Dover, roof gardens and avenues at Wembley Park and groundworks at the University of Winchester.

It is in these and other private, commercial and public open space projects where the correct specification, selection and supply of soils, gravels and aggregates is critical.

Choose the right landscape materials

Whether gabion stone for a cage wall or bank reinforcement, new planting or a forecourt of self-binding gravel that looks great all year round, discuss your options with us – we can guide you on product selection and advise on site preparation, calculating how much you need and how it can best be delivered to site dependent on access, space and location.  MCM supply in loose, direct-to-site loads up to 20 tonnes or in multi-lift bags so that deliveries can be tailored to suit.

British Standards soils and blends for planting, turf and meadow

Now more than ever, we want to embrace and enjoy our outdoor spaces.  And whilst your park is more than likely blessed with a natural environment, you can always add more – perhaps some hedge screening, new planting beds, lawns, playgrounds, improvements to your wooded areas or perhaps even a living wall or green roof.  Creating new beds means new soil and to ensure the healthiest establishment and long-term success of your planting, you should select the best soil blend and one that meets the most rigorous of British Standard specifications – and has the test certificate to prove it.  MCM supplies lightweight substrates for roof gardens and areas where soil weight and drainage are top considerations, as well as specialist soils for acid-loving plants. For wildflower planting in pockets around the development, choose a low fertility topsoil blend to provide the nutrient levels required for a thriving soft landscape whilst suppressing the onset of invasive weeds across the planting scheme.

The perfect park landscape

For paved and unpaved roads, temporary working areas or to prepare for an outdoor event, choose an aggregate that compacts and drains without losing stability.  For new trees, shrubs or turfed areas, choose a rootzone material for a healthy root boost and a great start in life.  For walls and embankments or a contemporary landscape statement, choose gabion stone, Scottish cobbles or other decorative aggregates to emphasise and complement the luxury of your accommodation.

A welcoming environment

Lakeside, forest path or car parking – the ground really matters.   Make best of use of the space and the landscape around your park by ensuring each surface is fit for purpose.  Crushed concrete for roadways and access; self-binding gravel for forecourts and around high traffic areas; permeable recycled aggregates for paving sub-bases; free-draining soils for planted areas; low fertility soils for wildflower planting and bioretention soils for swales to alleviate flood risks and waterlogging.
